A step-by-step masterclass on drafting a doctoral synopsis that passes Departmental Research Committee (DRC) and RDC evaluation on the first submission.
1. Purpose of the PhD Synopsis in Indian Universities
In the Indian doctoral journey, the synopsis (also referred to as the research blueprint or pre-registration document) is the legal contract between the scholar, the research guide, and the university. Once the Research Degree Committee (RDC) approves your synopsis, your title, objectives, and broad scope are frozen.
A synopsis is typically 20 to 40 double-spaced pages and must demonstrate to external reviewers that your proposed doctoral inquiry is viable, methodologically sound, and academically significant.
2. The Mandatory 10-Section Structure
- Most Indian central and state universities require the following structure:
- Title Page: Clear, non-poetic title with student enrollment details and guide credentials.
- Introduction & Theoretical Background: Introducing core variables and industry/social context.
- Statement of the Problem: The specific dilemma your research addresses.
- Need & Significance of the Study: Why this research matters to academia and society.
- Brief Review of Literature: Thematic summary of 30-50 seminal and recent studies.
- Research Gaps Identified: Clear articulation of what past literature missed.
- Objectives of the Study: 4 to 6 focused, measurable statements.
- Hypotheses Formulation: Null ($H_0$) and alternate ($H_1$) hypotheses aligned with objectives.
- Research Methodology: Universe, sample size, sampling method, instruments, and statistical tests.
- Proposed Chapter Scheme & References: Chapter outline and APA/IEEE reference list.
3. Framing Objectives and Hypotheses
- Every objective must be operational and testable. Avoid vague verbs like "To explore" or "To understand". Instead, use measurable action verbs:
- "To measure the impact of transformational leadership on employee retention..."
- "To examine whether organizational culture mediates the relationship between..."
- "To compare the performance efficiency of proposed algorithm against standard benchmarks..."
- Each relational objective must pair with an explicit hypothesis. If you have 5 relational objectives, you should have 5 clearly enumerated hypotheses.
4. Designing the Proposed Chapter Scheme
- Include a tentative 5-to-6 chapter plan:
- Chapter 1: Introduction & Conceptual Overview
- Chapter 2: Literature Review & Conceptual Framework
- Chapter 3: Research Methodology & Instrument Design
- Chapter 4: Data Analysis, Hypothesis Testing & Interpretation
- Chapter 5: Discussion of Findings, Theoretical Implications & Limitations
- Chapter 6: Conclusion, Policy Recommendations & Future Directions
5. Preparing for the Synopsis Presentation (PPT Defense)
- When presenting to the DRC or RDC:
- Keep slides to a maximum of 15-20.
- Spend 60% of your presentation time on the Methodology, Sample Size, and Statistical Plan.
- Be prepared to answer: "Why is this sample size sufficient?" and "Which exact statistical test will test Hypothesis 3?"
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the synopsis title be modified later before final thesis submission?
Minor title modifications are permissible in many universities with supervisor endorsement before pre-submission, but major shifts require formal Academic Council or RDC re-approval.
